How we find pharmacy candidates
Why pharmacy jobs stay open
Pharmacy technician program enrollment is down 60% since 2011. There are roughly 14,200 pharmacist openings each year, but only about 12,639 PharmD graduates entering the workforce annually, according to BLS data. For pharmacy techs, hospital and ambulatory jobs generally pay more than retail, which helps explain why the people you want are often already working somewhere else. And with 70% of pharmacies currently short-staffed, the problem isn't a lack of hiring. The pool is simply tight because most of the experienced people are already employed.
Then there's the competition. CVS, Walgreens and the big grocery chains are all hiring from the same pool, often at a scale that independent pharmacies, hospitals, and specialty pharmacies can't match when it comes to benefits or scheduling. There's also no multistate pharmacy compact, so hiring someone from another state can add a registration window that isn't always built into the hiring timeline. An out of state candidate may need 30 to 60 days to get licensed before they can start.
And a CPhT certification only tells you so much. A retail tech and a hospital inpatient tech can have the same credential, but their actual experience can be completely different. IV admixture, unit dose workflows, sterile compounding training, those skills don't come with the title. Getting that wrong costs time and can create real operational risk. That's why pharmacy screening has to go further than what's written on the resume.

Frequently asked questions
Most CPhT searches get a first shortlist within 72 to 96 hours. After that, it really depends on the market, the setting, and the compensation. Hospital and specialty pharmacy searches can take a little longer because there are fewer techs with the specific experience you need. Once you find the right person, though, it's worth moving quickly. Good pharmacy techs are often talking to more than one employer.
We work on contingency. You don't pay anything unless you hire someone. The fee is a percentage of the candidate's first-year compensation, and we agree on that before we start. If you don't hire the candidate, there's no fee.
There just aren't as many coming through the pipeline. At the same time, large chain pharmacies are competing for the same certified technicians and can often offer pay and benefits that smaller independent or hospital pharmacies can't match. Most pharmacy tech staffing agencies pull from that same active pool. We don't, we reach employed technicians directly.
Yes, if IV experience is important to the role, we look for people who have actually done that work. We don't treat a general pharmacy background as the same thing. That's particularly important for hospital inpatient pharmacy, home infusion, and sterile compounding, where the day-to-day work is very different.
They do. Pharmacists need a license for the state where they practice, and the process for transferring a license varies by state. Technician requirements vary too. Some states require registration, some require certification, and some require both. There is also no multistate pharmacy compact.
We check what's required for the specific role and state before introducing a candidate, and we factor any registration or licensing time into the search from the beginning.
Most pharmacy staffing agencies and pharmacy recruitment agencies source from the same pool. We take a different route. Our pharmacy recruiters go after employed candidates whose experience fits the role you're trying to fill. You don't need 50 resumes. You need a few people you'd actually want to hire.
We check the basics first - active state board of pharmacy registration, PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT certification for technician roles, PharmD or RPh licensure for pharmacist roles, and DEA registration where it's required.
We also talk with the candidate about the actual work they've done. For clinical pharmacist roles, we confirm ASHP residency completion and relevant specialty certifications as well.
