Before we send across candidates

Our approach to phlebotomist recruiting is built around ongoing relationships with experienced professionals, giving our recruiters access to candidates long before they're actively searching for a new role. Before presenting any candidate, we verify:

CPT, BPT, NCPT, or equivalent national credential through issuing body records
California CDPH certification (CPT I, CPT II, CPT LI) for all California placements
Venipuncture and capillary collection proficiency including butterfly and difficult-access technique
Setting match - hospital inpatient, reference lab, outpatient clinic, mobile, pediatric, blood bank
Pediatric draw experience where applicable (heel stick, pediatric patient management)
Geriatric patient experience where applicable
Specimen labeling, handling, and chain of custody protocols for occupational health and forensic/drug testing draws
LIS system proficiency (Cerner/Beaker, Sunquest, Meditech, or facility-specific)
Shift availability including early morning and rotating shifts
OSHA bloodborne pathogen (BBP) training compliance
Professional references and employment verification
If you're hiring for other allied health roles as well, our team also recruits Respiratory Therapists, Surgical Technologists, and other allied health specialists. Visit our Allied Health Recruiters page to see the full range of roles we support.

What catches employers off guard when hiring phlebotomists

Working with a phlebotomist staffing agency that screens for setting and credential match, not just certification status, helps catch those issues before they become hiring mistakes.

Not every phlebotomist has the same background. Someone who's spent five years at a LabCorp patient service center drawing scheduled appointments is doing a very different job from someone starting at 6 a.m., moving between the ICU and med-surg floors, drawing from critically ill patients. Both are experienced, but that doesn't mean they're interchangeable. We always ask where someone has worked before recommending them for a role.

California is another place where employers can get caught out. A national certification from ASCP, NHA, or NCCT isn't enough on its own. Phlebotomists also need a current California Department of Public Health (CDPH) certificate to legally draw blood. CPT I covers standard venipuncture, while CPT II is required for lead and supervisory roles. We verify all of that before introducing anyone for a California position. Mobile phlebotomy is different again. You're often working alone in a patient's home without the support you'd have in a hospital or lab. It takes confidence, good judgment, reliable transportation, and experience handling difficult draws independently. We look for those skills specifically instead of assuming every phlebotomist has them.

The same goes for pediatric phlebotomy. Drawing blood from infants and children is very different from drawing adults. Heel sticks, butterfly needles, and keeping anxious children calm all take experience. If pediatric experience matters for the role, we make sure the candidate has actually done that kind of work before we recommend them.

Frequently asked questions

For most employers, a current certification from one of the four main national organizations is enough. That includes ASCP (BPT), NHA (CPT), NCCT (NCPT), and AMCA (CPT).

California is the one state where things are different. Along with a national certification, phlebotomists also need a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) certificate. Without it, they can't legally draw blood in California, no matter how much experience they have.

That's one of the first things we check on every California search. Everywhere else, we simply verify that the national certification is current.

Both certifications come from the California Department of Public Health, but they're used for different roles.

CPT I is the standard certification most phlebotomists hold. It covers routine venipuncture and capillary collections. CPT II is intended for lead and supervisory positions. It includes everything covered under CPT I, along with supervisory responsibilities.

One thing that catches employers by surprise is that a national certification isn't enough in California. Candidates still need a current CDPH certificate. We make sure that's verified before anyone is introduced.
