What the nursing market actually looks like

Demand for nursing assistants continues to grow. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for nursing assistants to increase through 2032, with healthcare support occupations adding more than 1.2 million jobs nationwide. Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) continue to feel the greatest pressure. According to AHCA/NCAL, nearly one in five nursing homes has closed units or reduced bed capacity because of nursing assistant shortages.

Hiring timelines have stretched as competition for experienced candidates has increased. Filling a CNA position through traditional job postings typically takes months, and often longer in rural or highly competitive markets.

The facilities hiring the fastest usually aren't relying on job boards alone. They're working with a nursing assistant agency that already has relationships with employed candidates before those candidates begin looking for a new opportunity.

What we verify before presenting any candidate

Our CNA agency recruiters identify candidates currently working in comparable roles, reach out through direct recruiter relationships, and screen for the credential and compliance requirements your setting actually needs. Before presenting any candidate, we check for:

Active state Nurse Aide Registry listing (CNA, STNA, GNA, or applicable state equivalent)
Sex offender registry clearance and criminal background screening
HHA competency documentation (for home health placements)
CPR/BLS certification- current, not expired
TB screening compliance (2-step PPD or IGRA, per facility requirement)
Setting specific clinical experience:memory care, behavioral health, inpatient rehab, or hospital-based care as applicable
PCT certification or phlebotomy/EKG credentials where required by the hiring system
Compensation expectations, scheduling requirements, and geographic availability
Nothing replaces your interview. Our job is to eliminate the candidates who don't belong in the conversation before they reach your desk.

What kind of nursing assistant does your setting need?

The credential that matters depends on your setting and what CMS or your state requires. Every search we run as a certified nursing assistant agency starts with confirming the right credential for your setting - before a single candidate is contacted.

Setting Credential required Why it matters
Skilled Nursing Facility CNA 42 CFR Part 483 requires active state Nurse Aide Registry listing for all direct care staff
Long-Term Care CNA Same CMS registry requirement applies to Medicare/Medicaid-certified LTC facilities
Hospital PCT or CNA PCT is standard in most systems; requirements vary by department and hospital policy
Home Health HHA or CNA Medicare/Medicaid agencies must meet HHA competency standards under Home Health CoP
Assisted Living / Memory Care CNA or Caregiver State-regulated - requirements vary; we confirm before recruiting

Frequently asked questions

"Nursing assistant" is a broad term. The credential you need depends on your care setting and the requirements set by CMS or your state.

For skilled nursing facilities and Medicare or Medicaid-certified long-term care facilities, federal regulations under 42 CFR Part 483 require direct care staff to be listed on the state Nurse Aide Registry. In practice, that means hiring a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), not just someone with a nursing assistant title. Candidates who haven't completed a state-approved training program and passed the competency evaluation can't legally work in those settings. It's an important distinction that many staffing agencies overlook.

Hospitals typically hire Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) instead. Many PCTs hold a CNA credential or a phlebotomy certification in addition to patient care training. Requirements vary by health system, so we screen candidates based on what your facility expects.

For home health, a Home Health Aide (HHA) certification is often enough. However, agencies that accept Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement must ensure aides meet the HHA competency requirements under the Home Health Conditions of Participation.

Some states also use different titles. Ohio uses STNA (State Tested Nursing Assistant), while Maryland uses GNA (Geriatric Nursing Assistant). Our recruiters verify registry status in all 50 states.

If you're not sure which credential your role requires, just ask. We'll help you figure it out before the search begins.

Job boards like Indeed mostly reach nursing assistants who are actively looking for work. They're often applying to several employers at the same time.

Unlike a generalist job board, a specialized CNA agency like ExpertHiring spends most of its time speaking with nursing assistants who are already employed but open to the right opportunity. That gives you access to a different candidate pool and often leads to stronger long-term retention.

Both, depending on your setting. Before we begin the search, we'll confirm exactly which credential your role requires. For SNFs and long-term care facilities subject to CMS requirements, we only present candidates with an active state Nurse Aide Registry listing.

The title on the job posting matters far less than what your state regulations and payer requirements actually require. We've helped healthcare employers navigate this distinction across many SNF placements.

Absolutely, and it's a conversation worth having before recruiting starts. The right credential depends on your care setting, your state's requirements, and what the role involves day to day.

An HHA working for a Medicare-certified home health agency has different compliance requirements than a CNA in a SNF. We'll walk through your care environment and hiring goals first, then build the search around the right candidate profile.

Absolutely. That's part of every search.

During our recruiter interviews, we screen for experience in the specific care setting you need, whether that's memory care, behavioral health, inpatient rehabilitation, or another specialty. We don't send general nursing assistants into specialized care environments and expect you to sort through the difference.

Before introducing a candidate, we verify active state Nurse Aide Registry status, confirm CPR/BLS currency, and complete criminal background and sex offender registry screening.
