What we verify before introducing a school nurse candidate
School nursing staffing requires a different screening process than standard nursing placement. Before a school nurse candidate reaches your interview team, we verify the qualifications, experience, and school-specific requirements that matter for your environment.
The school nurses you're looking for aren't always on job boards
Finding an experienced school nurse isn't getting any easier. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) estimates that roughly 25% of U.S. schools operate without a full-time school nurse, and many districts have more than 600 students for every school nurse on staff.
School nursing staffing works differently from clinical nursing placement, and so does the candidate pool. The experienced RN who's spent the last three years as a school nurse in a neighboring district probably isn't on Indeed. She gets recruiter messages from time to time and ignores most of them. She already has the schedule she wants, summers off, school holidays, and strong relationships with students. She's not leaving unless the opportunity is genuinely better. The nurse considering a move into school nursing is different. She's an RN working in pediatrics or family medicine who's starting to value schedule stability. She's not actively searching. She's simply open to the right conversation.
Our school nurse recruiters build relationships with both groups. We stay connected with nurses already working in schools across your region and with experienced clinical RNs who've told us they're interested in making the transition. When your search begins, we already know who's open to a conversation, what they're looking for, and whether your district's offer will be competitive before we make an introduction.

Frequently asked questions
Job boards like Indeed typically attract school nurses who are actively looking for a new role, often nurses between jobs or those new to school nursing.
Our recruiters spend most of their time speaking with experienced school nurses who are already employed but open to the right opportunity. That gives you access to candidates with stronger school-based experience, greater familiarity with the role, and a better long-term fit than you would typically find through a job posting alone.
School nursing is different because it sits at the intersection of healthcare, education law, and public administration. A nurse who thrives in a hospital isn't automatically the right fit for a school district. In addition to holding an active RN license, many states require school nurses to earn a state-specific certification or department of education credential. For example, California requires a School Nurse Services Credential, while other states require a Praxis exam or coursework in educational administration and child development. Many districts also prefer candidates with the National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential, issued by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses.
School nurse vacancies also carry compliance implications. Under IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, school nurses play an important role in developing health-related IEPs and 504 plans for students with disabilities. Because schools work on a fixed academic calendar, timing matters too. A search launched in late spring needs to be completed before the new school year begins, while a vacancy that opens in October leaves the health office understaffed mid-year. That's why our recruiters plan school nurse searches around both compliance requirements and the school calendar.
At a minimum, a school nurse needs an active RN license in the state where the district operates. Many states also require a school nurse certification or department of education credential, which may involve passing the Praxis exam, completing additional coursework, or both.
For example, California requires a School Nurse Services Credential in addition to an RN license. Many districts also prefer or require the National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential for permanent positions.
Before every search, we confirm your state's requirements and only introduce candidates who meet them.
Very.
Under IDEA and Section 504, school nurses are essential participants in the IEP process. For students with medically complex needs, medication administration, diabetes management, seizure protocols, and nurse involvement in IEP development may be legally mandated. When the position is vacant, it affects more than day-to-day health services. It can also create a compliance gap for students whose plans require ongoing nursing support during the school day.
Districts have been cited for IEP compliance issues related to inadequate nursing coverage. If your schools serve students with medically complex IEPs, it's not a vacancy you want to leave open for long.
Absolutely. We recruit for public school districts, charter schools, private schools, and special education schools.
Each has its own credential requirements, hiring process, and budget considerations, so we tailor the search accordingly. Charter school networks, for example, often hire more quickly than traditional public school districts, which can affect the search timeline.
Yes, provided the search begins early enough. Most school nurse searches produce a first shortlist within 72 to 96 hours, and the full hiring process typically takes 3 to 5 weeks from search launch to offer acceptance.
If you're hiring for an August start, beginning the search in May or June gives you the best chance of success. Starting in July is still possible, but the timeline becomes much tighter. We'll give you a realistic timeline before the search begins.
Hiring a school nurse involves additional screening because the role works directly with minors. Depending on the state, that may include a state criminal background check, sex offender registry verification, and a child abuse registry check.
Some states process these clearances through the state department of education rather than a traditional background screening provider. We build those requirements into our vetting process and confirm the necessary clearances before presenting any candidate.
Your next school nurse may not be looking for a school job yet.
Our recruiters identify, engage, and screen these professionals before they begin actively searching, helping schools hire experienced nurses who are ready to make a long-term move into education.
