Social work roles we place
Different organizations hire social workers for fundamentally different purposes. Whether you need LCSW staffing for independent clinical roles or LMSW placement for care coordination, our behavioral health recruiters cover the full credential range.
Independent clinical practice: psychotherapy, behavioral health assessment, crisis intervention, and treatment planning.
Case management, care coordination, discharge planning, and behavioral health support.
Hospital discharge planning, chronic illness navigation, transitions of care, home health, and ACO-integrated care settings.
Inpatient and outpatient mental health, crisis stabilization units, and co-occurring disorder programs.
End-of-life planning, grief counseling, resource coordination, and interdisciplinary hospice team support.
K-12 districts, IEP team collaboration, special education support, and student behavioral health programs.
CPS agencies, foster care, adoption services, and family preservation programs.
State-specific license variants we source include: LICSW (MA, WA, DC), LCSW-C (MD), LSCSW (NC), and LGSW for pre-licensed master's-level hires.
Hiring across behavioral health more broadly? Our team also places BCBAs, licensed therapists, mental health counselors, and care coordinators - see our Behavioral Health Recruiters page.
What goes into every social worker search
Clinical social worker staffing requires more than a licensure check. The right candidate also needs experience in your clinical environment, familiarity with your patient population, and the credential level that matches what the role legally requires. Before introducing any candidate, we verify:
Why clinical social worker hiring stalls before it should
On paper, hiring a clinical social worker seems straightforward. In reality, this is where a lot of employers get stuck.
The biggest issue is usually the license. We often see organizations interview candidates who are licensed, but not at the level the role actually requires. An LMSW can't provide independent clinical services in most states and must work under the supervision of an LCSW. Hiring an LMSW before that supervision is in place doesn't really move the search forward. It usually creates compliance issues that don't show up until an accreditation review.
If you're hiring across multiple states, there's even more to think about. The Social Work Licensure Compact has now been enacted in 35 states as of July 2026 - but multistate licenses are not yet active. The data system that enables compact practice is under development, with applications expected to open in 2027. Those steps are easy to underestimate and can slow hiring when you're trying to move quickly.
That's why most of our social worker searches begin with a licensing audit, not a job posting. We confirm credential level, supervision requirements, and compact status before a single candidate is contacted.

Frequently asked questions
It's a competitive market, especially if you're hiring experienced LCSWs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work employment is projected to grow 6% from 2024 to 2034. Behavioral health and rural healthcare organizations often have the toughest time hiring because demand continues to outpace the available talent pool.
In many markets, experienced LCSWs are interviewing with multiple employers at the same time. We've found that organizations that move quickly from shortlist to offer are far more likely to secure their preferred candidate.
It really comes down to the level of clinical responsibility. An LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) can typically provide independent clinical services, including assessments, diagnosis, and therapy. An LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) usually performs clinical work under the supervision of an LCSW.
If your opening involves independent clinical practice, you'll generally need an LCSW. For case management, care coordination, or supervised clinical roles, an LMSW may be the right choice. Since scope of practice varies by state, it's always worth confirming your state's licensing requirements before hiring.
A social worker staffing agency helps employers hire licensed professionals such as LCSWs, LMSWs, and MSW-level case managers for hospitals, behavioral health organizations, school districts, and other healthcare settings.
That means finding qualified candidates, verifying licenses and credentials, reviewing supervision requirements where needed, and making sure each person is a good fit before they're introduced.
At ExpertHiring, we recruit exclusively for permanent and contract positions. Most of the social workers we place are already employed and aren't actively looking for a new job.
We recruit both permanent and contract roles. We don't do travel staffing. Our focus usually is on experienced professionals who are already working and open to the right long-term opportunity.
Yes, especially if you're hiring across multiple states. The Social Work Licensure Compact has been enacted in 35 states as of July 2026, but multistate licenses are not yet active. The system that will support compact practice is still being developed, with applications expected to open in 2027.
For now, social workers still need a separate license for every state where they'll practice, even if both states have enacted the compact. We verify each candidate's licensing status before making an introduction.
ExpertHiring works on a contingency basis, which means there's no upfront fee.
Our placement fee is based on the candidate's first-year compensation, and you only pay if we successfully fill the position. Once we learn more about your hiring needs, we'll explain our fee structure.
We can run both searches at the same time.
If you're building a clinical team, it's usually best for the LCSW to start first, or alongside your first group of LMSWs, since LMSWs performing clinical work typically require LCSW supervision. We map out the hiring timeline at the beginning of the search so your team is set up correctly from day one.
Your patients deserve the right social worker
The right social worker reduces care gaps, keeps IEP plans on track, and prevents the kind of documentation failures that show up during accreditation reviews.
No upfront fees. Pay only if you hire.
